CDs are highly reflective, and make decent mirrors. They could indeed be used to focus the sun's energy onto a spot about the size of a CD, which would be perfect for cooking an egg or a hot dog.

Here's how:

Start with a 2 foot square piece of plywood.

Place a CD in the center, using a fast setting glue, such as from a hot glue gun.

Set the plywood against something like a tree or a house, and aim the reflected light from the CD onto something (say a cardboard box) about 3 feet away.

Glue another CD onto the board, just touching the edge of the first CD. Use a small piece of wood
under the outside edge of the second CD to tilt it slightly, so that the reflected light from the second CD hits the same spot on the cardboard box as the first spot.

Continue doing this until the board is covered with CDs, all of them reflecting the sun onto one CD-sized spot on the cardboard box. Be careful not to catch the box on fire while doing this.

You now have a pretty decent solar cooker.

Since CDs are made out of plastic, they cannot be used to generate electricity by themselves. But you could use the solar cooker to boil water for a steam engine connected to an electrical generator.

I did try and make one .
Is it possible to maximise its efficiency by filling in gaps since the cds are round, could the gaps between them be filled with cut up cds ?
How much of a difference would it make?

Just take an old used 6' satellite dish and coat it with pieces of mirror, CDd, or aluminum foil. Would be 36x more powerful.
