Now why would you want to blow yourself up?

Keep the can small, and you'll have a better chance of keeping all of your
fingers.

Suppose your container holds 1 liter of fuel/air mixture, and that you
get the optimum fuel/air ratio by experiment or calculation.

The resulting explosion will generate 1.5 megawatts of power in a few
microseconds. Don't get too close.

Yeah, or else the cumbustion will not be entirely contained and the propulsion will not be strong enough to remove the can from its holder. It would be like trying to blow up a baloon with holes in it.

When I was younger we use to make potato cannons along the same lines as the film can cannon. We never got hurt with ours but just as a disclaimer I can not guarantee the safety. We would take a three inch diameter thick wall PVC pipe at least three feet long and glue a threaded coupler on one end. We would get a PVC cap that would screw into this coupler to seal one end. Next we would drill a small hole in the side of the PVC pipe close to the end that is capped. This hole is for putting the igniter wires into the PVC gas chamber (seal it with caulk). All you need next is a potato slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe and a can of hairspray. Cut the potato in half cross ways like as if you are planning on making round chips not wedges. Take the half potato and jam it down the open end of the pipe. Use a broom stick to push it down the pipe as if you were loading an old time cannon. Push the potato almost to the end of the pipe with the cap on it. Leave just enough room to have a small chamber for gas and the igniter. Unscrew the cap from the end. Spray hair spray in the chamber and quickly replace the cap. Squeeze the trigger on the igniter and see the potato launch out of the other end. Do not aim the potato at people or property as it can have a lot of power behind it.
