The sensor is probably a missing pulse detector.
These work by sending pulses of a certain length,
such as 1 millisecond, at a certain rate, such as
every 5 milliseconds. The receiver has a timer
that goes off in 6 milliseconds, unless it is
reset by the receipt of a pulse from the transmitter.
The range is probably about 40 feet.

The laser communicator is probably much simpler
to build and modify, cheaper, and has a range of
hundreds of feet without optical aids, or miles
if telescopes are used.

I started out as a biochemist, but these days I write
compilers and operating systems for computers.

I haven't tried it.
