Ok I don't hav thematerials for my gauss rifle idea so I went for the next best thing the laser transmitter. I was wondering if it would be possible to use the laser (I beleive they use lasers) from a cd player, I have two right now, one came from a cd player and another from a diskman(It's about half the size.) would these work. |

I see some problems, but they are not insurmountable. However, they are probably a lot more trouble than buying a $10 pocket laser. First, the laser in the CD player is an infrared laser. This makes it a little hard to get the aiming right, since you can't see it. Also, the laser in the CD player is designed to focus the beam to a point very close to the laser. You will need to add lenses that will collimate the beam so it makes the rays parallel, so the spot the laser makes stays close to the same size no matter what the distance is. You will have to make sure the lenses you use will work in the infrared, and do all this without being able to see the beam. Lastly, you will need to be very careful with the current. Lasers operate at currents that are just below that needed to destroy them. Measure the current going into the laser before you take the player apart, and measure the voltage. Then use Ohm's Law to calculate the voltage you need to keep the maximum current in your transmitter at or below the current you measured in the player. ----------- |
