I have tryed using a pringles container in place of the film can. The cannon made a REALLY LOUD BANG and a BIGGER FLAME but diddent go higher than the 5 film can cannons that i have made about a month ago. I discovered that the weight of the metel bottom kept the cannon down. if anybody would like to try maby if you cut the bottom off and put some ducktape in place of the metel it would go higher. LET THE PEOPLE HERE KNOW HOW IT WORKS!!! P.S. I ALSO WIRED TOGETHER 5 FILM CAN CANNONS TO SEE IF THEY WOULD FIRE OFF ALL AT ONCE AND THEY DID. THE ONLY THING THAT I NEVER CHANGED ON IT THAT HAD TO BE CHANGED WAS ADD MORE POWER (TRY WIRING TOGETHER 2 Piezo-electric ignitors FOR BETTER PREFORMANCE) |

You could try a car ignition coil instead of the piezos. I have managed 6cm sparks or more! Very good for ingiting stuf, wood, gas(ouch), plastic, hair spray(and the hair), it constructed propely it car mark metal and glass!! The good part? Easy and cheap. I think i went a bit off-topic. Also try using desodorant, dissolvent and anything else witch is flamable, just dont burn the house down. Another way to improve it might be by adding an extra hole in the lid in witch you insert a tube that fits snugly over a can of deodorant/binaca/ect and then disconect it, hold the pipe close(a peg maybe) and FIRE!! Hope this helps. The mad scientist. |

Well, the ignitors are $2.00 each (in the 10 pack). They're not much more than that in a lighter. Of course, they're free if you get them from someone who is about to discard an empty lighter. Ignition coils are $13.00 and up. And they are big, and they need a battery. Altogether, that would increase the cost, size, and weight of the cannon considerably. We found the Binaca to be best because of the metered spray. Each spray gives the same amount of propellant, making it easy to get the right amount. And, because it is alcohol and isobutane, it has a nice mix of gas and vapor for the explosion. It also smells nice, unlike some of the other things people have tried. If the tube is of small diameter, you will not need to hold it closed. The explosion is too fast for much gas to exit through the tube. The problem will be controlling the amount of fuel, and getting it to mix properly with the air. When we fill the can with the Binaca, we hold it a couple inches away from the can, so the spray mixes well with the air as it enters the can. |

hay its me (the guy that posted the top message) Dont worry simon I cant burn the house down too easly because I do my experiments outside. I have also thought of making a base of wood for the cannon, taking a new fireplace lighter and adding a fuel line with the spark gap. I began to do this but got a little off and sort if made it into and flame thrower. (this is something you really should do outside). (and dont keep the fuel running for too long or th fuel tank could blow). |

how do you get the ignitor out of an empty lighter? P.S. THE SIMPLE LASER COMMUNICATOR IS AWSOME. IT WON ME FIRST AT MY SCHOOL AND GOLD AT THE REGONALS! |

Excellent! Most lighters come apart fairly easily. Usually you can pry the metal parts off, and the plastic parts just fall away. |

I tried firing the film cannon through a pipe and it gave pretty good results (kind of like a mortar). Now I have moved on to other devices including a spud gun. For the pringles can concept, I would use a butane refill canister for lighters and a tube that fit over the end to spray butane into the pringles can, and then use a large BBQ or Fireplace piezo electric igniter to set it off. You could use some Nickel Chromium wire inside there instead but it would require a second or so to get hot enough for the fuel to ignite. You could also use a valve to regulate the amount of fuel. Whatever fuel you are using, the container/canister shouldn't explode because there should not be any oxygen in the container/canister, but don't play with fate. Could you make a section about building a Sterling engine? |

try this new idea. start by building a regular film can cannon but then add some components from a fire place lighter(fuel pipe). to fire pump fuel into the cannon and then spark the sparker. i havent tryed this yet but i don't see why it wouldent work. post how it works below |

i used a fireplace lighter and just took the lead from the butane to the canister and it worked great. |

back to the original question, could you launch the cap instead of the can. |

Sure, but it won't go as far, and the cannon won't look as nice. |

The Film Can Hand Cannon The basic concept is just to mount the Film Can Cannon in the body of a toy gun. Pictures and text on my blog: http://www.livejournal.com/users/chairmanceo/34587.html You can see in the photo below, how I mounted the ignitor.

my friend said you can make a film can cannon using antacids, not chemicals wiht alcohol..... is this possible??? if yes, how??? |

yes put water in the contaner add the fizzy antacid and put the cap on while the lid is at the top and the gasses produced from the reaction with the antacid will pop the lid off a good 2 meters. |

Another mod of the film can cannon. A cheapo long necked butane lighter can supply both fuel (butane instead of the Binaca) and the piezo to create the spark. In addition, it gives a nice hand held shape. See http://www.inpharmix.com/jps/Lighter_popper.html The original lighter;
Modified to a Popper;

Nice photos, this would be a good reference if you put little bit of description of the steps for those who want to make one like yours. But over all the photos itself is enough. |

Nice, try putting a piece of clay at the canister's bottom so it will have some weight and fly farther. |
