I've mounted the magnets on a standard ruler with a groove, but when I load the 8 balls, they don't lie nicely in the groove. Then tend to sit a bit high (above the groove). So sometimes when I fire ball #9, it doesn't fire nicely. Have I set this up wrong?

It sounds like you may not have the poles of the magnets lined up
with the ruler. All the north poles should be facing one end of the ruler,
and the south poles facing the other.
