I don't know how many of yall play guitar but there are these little guitar amplifiers that fit in a cigarrette box and they run off of a 9v battery. (http://www.smokeyamps.com/)

From what I have found they work from a really simple circuit, based around LM386 chip. The schematic is at http://www.blueguitar.org/new/schem/_ss/smokey.gif.

I think this would make a great Science toy because it is simple and inexpensive. It would be great to have clear instructions on how to build one.

With some simple modification, this could be used as a portable speaker for a walkman type device.

You must have missed our page on integrated circuit audio amplifiers.

One more question,

I really like to build on the cheap (especially because the probability that I'll mess up is high,)so I want to avoid shipping/handling charges by buying the components at RadioShack.

Do you have the RadioShack part #'s for the parts that go into the integrated circuit audio amplifier I don't really know what type of capacitors (ceramic disk?) and resistors to get.

Once again, thank you, I was really amazed at how quick the response was (20 minutes,) how do you do it?

Ceramic disk capacitors and carbon film resistors.
Nothing fancy.
