A simple wire telephone is simply two speakers wired together.
If you shout into one, someone can hear your voice in the other.

An improvement is to have the receiver use a piezoelectric earphone.
A further improvement is to have the receiver use an audio transformer
and a piezoelectric earphone. Connect the 8 ohm side to the speaker,
the two long wires to the 1,000 ohm side, and the piezoelectric earphone
to the other end of the two long wires.

You can also use two regular telephones and a 9 volt battery.
Each phone has two wires coming from it (the red and the green).
Connect the red wires from phone to phone. Connect the green wire
from each phone to a different terminal of the battery. If both
phones are off the hook at the same time, you can talk, just like on
a phone connected to the phone company.

I tried connecting the phones together like you said but it only works one-way. What do you think I have done wrong?

I had to add another 9v battery and a 680 ohm resistor to get this to work properly
