First of all, I'll bet you can copy CW on a crystal radio.
The CW signal will sound like a quieting of the background noise.

You might search for phrases like "direct conversion receiver",
"NE602 receiver", or "one chip receiver".

Also look up building a coherer. They are very simple (tube of metal filings), and were used in the early days to detect morse code. You can also use mercury, but I wouldn't recommend it!
