How about a computer controlled device that uses an infrared LED instead of an oscillator?

I have done this, but how can I get the transmission to go farther, like a tv remote.

Use a transistor or a hex inverter to amplify the signal.
The serial port does not source very much current.
But it can turn on a transistor, which can then power the LED.
Likewise, the serial port can be used as the input to a hex inverter.
If you tie all of the inputs together, and all of the outputs together,
the hex inverter can source much more current than the serial port can.

Can this be accomplished with the sound port? Because I have also tried sending morse code over an infrared LED through the speaker port and sent it to another computer with a reciever LED. Pretty cool. I have even used a regular LED.
