maby an idea for a good project:
building antennas with a big range.
It would be fun to increase the range of the senders/recievers of R/C models.

or antennas that work a few meters under water for R/C subs.

There are some great books out there on antennas.
Two of them are listed in our Recommended Reading page.

Changing the antenna on a commercial remote control transmitter
is illegal. However, with an amateur radio license (easy to get)
you can use the high power transmitters allowed in certain bands
and get ranges measured in many miles. And you can use a big
antenna.

Is there any way to make an antenna for my handheld games system that uses wireless LAN for multiplayer? My friend lives mabye 200-400 feet away and the max range for the wireless is 100 feet. Its called a Nintendo DS. I would really like to make something without opening it, thus voiding the warranty.

I simply used a long wooden dowel and a screen,
with a wire connected to the transmitter.

the best answer to that question would be to add a call phone external antenna to the back of the ds, i dont know if it will work.

The Nintendo DS uses standard WiFi frequencies and protocols.
There are many web sites that show you how to increase the range
of WiFi signals, either through amplifiers or directional antennas.
Google for "cantenna" or "wifi 24 dbi dish".

With a dish at each end, your range can extend to miles.
