Buy the following parts of PVC Pipe: 1. 2 ft long 3" diameter 2. 4 ft long 2" diameter 3. 3" > 2" reducer 4. Threaded end cap holder 5. Threaded end cap(this screws into the end cap holder) 6. PVC Primer 7. PVC Glue 8. Alumanum or Duct tape 9. Right Guard 10. Fireplace Lighter Building it: Take 3" pipe and attach reducer and attach 2" pipe Take 3" pipe and attach end cap holder and end cap to other end To attach prime the peice, wait a minute, add glue and stick together Wrap everything in duct tape so that in the event of an explosion(shouldn't happen unless you do something stupid), it holds together and just breaches slightly Drill a hole the fireplace lighter nozel can fit through in the middel of the 3" pipe. Operating: 1. Shove potato down the barrel with a broomstick 2. Unscrew Cap 3. Spray in 3 seconds of Right Guard 4. Screw in Cap 5. Stick fireplace lighter nozel threw hole in chamber 6. Shoot "FIRE IN THE HOLE" or some other warning 7. Squeeze trigger. 8. Watch Potato Shoot 600+ ft. This is easy to build, and costs about $30. Let the glue dry and the gun air out 24 hours |

I chose to write about the Film Can Cannon rather than the Potato Cannon for several reasons. First, if you type "potato cannon" into Google, you get 38,900 web pages that describe them. Now that you have described one here, there will be 38,901. I am sure that when Google next updates their indexes, there will be even more. My suspicion is that potato cannons are already adequately described on the web without a page written by me. Second, a potato cannon is not something you can fire indoors, and is not something a lot of parents or teachers would recommend as a science fair project, although much can be learned from them. On the other hand, the Film Can Cannon uses the same physics, it is safe to use in the house, and many of my readers have won science fairs by describing how it works, and demonstrating it for the judges. It makes a very impressive demonstration, without removing the nearby competition. But all of that is only why I haven't put up a web page about potato cannons. I have built a few of them, and had a lot of fun with them, and I am sure that people who read your description and make their own cannon will have a lot of fun as well. By the way, this guy is offering $20 if you redo his potato cannon web page to look nicer. Some other links found on Google: here videos more |

Which explosion? Pretend no one has any context, and ask your question from scratch, giving all of the information needed to answer it. This is a long thread about film can cannons, and potato cannons, and the latter can be made in many diameters and use many fuels. If you have a fuel and a volume, we can calculate the energy of the fuel-air explosion that results. We will have a harder time calculating the power, since we won't have any good data on the rate of the reaction. |

I'm sure the cannon works, but how much should you trust this illiterate fool? |

I have a diferent version, from an old book. Take pvc pipe, add a tee end to it. atach a vacume to the hanging end of the tee pipe. put a peice of paper infront of the tee end. on the other end, hold an object of you're choosing that fits the tube diameterslightly into the tube. Wait for suction from the vacume build up, then release the object. In theorey the object gets sucked into the pipe via the vacumes power, and before it hits the paper the paper falls off due to the presure from the object alowing the object to fly out the end fast. Oh, make sure that the object can't fit into the vacumes tee end, but can go through the tee. |

This is an old physics demo called the "vacuum bazooka", and is part of the title to an excellent book (check Amazon). There is an article about an improved version in a recent Physics Teacher magazine and a very detailed discussion of the physics of it in a recent American Journal of Physics (sorry I don't have the dates, but you can search their web pages). |

This is the proper place for the discussion. If I explain it to you here, I only have to do it once. What was it that you did not understand about my explanation? |
