When attempting to construct the Gauss Rifle, can I use larger square magnets (larger then 12mm) and use the same 5/8ths inch steel balls? Would larger magnets of the same material increase the velocity of the last ball? Or, would I a larger magnet require a larger ball, nullifying the advantage of a larger magnet? I was wondering if the weight of the ball is in proportion to the magnets used.

Thank you,
mike

The balls and magnets should be roughly the same mass.
Picture taking this to extremes.
If you have two balls of the same mass, one will stop
when it hits the other, which will then move with the
speed of the original ball.
However, if you shoot a BB at a cannonball, the BB will
bounce off, and the cannonball will barely move.

Where do you get the steel balls, I didn't see them on scitoys.
