We are playing with a gauss accelerator and attempting to measure the magnetic potential energy. We were planning on getting the potential energy from a graph of the magnetic force vs the distance but we don't know exactly where to measure the distance to. We were thinking about going from the center of the incoming ball to the center of the magnet but aren't sure that's right, given that the magnetic force is effected by the other two balls. Any ideas?

Do you know where I could get the 5/8 steel balls. They weren't on this site.
