I am working on characterizing the transfer characteristics of a stage in the Gauss rifle. To do a better job, I want to get a few of the 12mm rare-earth "magnets" that are not magnetized. I bought about 30 magnets from you already, but I don't think I will be very successful in de-gaussing them. Can I get non-magnetized versions from your supplier? |

If you heat the magnet to above its curie point, it should lose its magnetism, if I recall correctly. Try heating it up nice and slow with a blowtorch, to a dull red glow, and then once it cools test it with something iron to see if its lost its magnetism. |

You won't need anywhere near red heat. The Curie point is only about 310 degrees Celsius (590 Fahrenheit). A kitchen stove will handle it easily. |

Where can you buy 5/8 steel balls for this? I didn't see them on this site. |

My son and I just completed testing the Gauss rifle for his science fair project. The variables that he looked to test were distance between the magnets, number of magnets, and the affect on velocity. Since we don't have a way to measure the velocity of the exiting steel ball, we substituted distance traveled. Is this a good alternative? Having built a trebuchet last year, he was good with setting this up and testing the variables. We set the rifle at the edge of the workshop table and measured the distance at which the exiting ball struck the ground. The only change was the distance between the magnets and number of magnets in the system. I helped him add the data to an Excel file. Since my expertise in this area is quite basic, I can only guess at why the results were as found. I've attached the table that we made. Your suggestions would be appreciated as we can only guess at the why part. Overall, very cool. |
